The Battle of Brunanburh (937 AD): The True Turning Point

The film’s climax—the Battle of Brunanburh—is a real and significant historical event. In 937 AD, Æthelstan faced a massive alliance of enemies led by Anlaf (Olaf) Guthfrithson of Dublin, Constantine II of Scotland, and Owain of Strathclyde. Despite being outnumbered, Æthelstan achieved a decisive victory.

This battle is considered by many historians to be the defining moment when Æthelstan secured control over all of England. Chroniclers of the time called him "King of the English" and even "Emperor of the North."

The film dramatizes this moment while incorporating Uhtred’s fictional heroism—his tactics and leadership help turn the tide of battle. However, unlike the real Uhtred of Bebbanburg (who lived a century earlier), the fictional Uhtred’s journey ends shortly after this triumph.

Uhtred’s Ending: Death, Redemption, or Legacy?

Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the Saxon-born, Dane-raised warrior, has always walked a line between two worlds. By the end of the film, he ensures that Æthelstan wins the battle and secures his rule—but at a heavy personal cost. Wounded and fading, Uhtred returns to Bebbanburg, where he seems to see a vision of Valhalla—perhaps symbolizing that his time has come.

Yet, his death is left intentionally ambiguous. Did Uhtred die, or did he simply slip into unconsciousness, his story concluded but his legacy alive? Either way, Uhtred represents the last of the old world—the pagan, warrior-led Britain—giving way to a new era: a Christian, centralized kingdom.

Æthelstan’s Legacy: England United?

In the film, Æthelstan declares that there shall be no more petty kings, only one kingdom: England. Historically, this is accurate. Æthelstan is widely regarded as the first true King of England, as he unified the various Anglo-Saxon and Celtic realms under one rule following his victory at Brunanburh.

He ruled until 939 AD and was known for his administrative reforms, laws, and strong ties to continental Europe. Though his successors would struggle to maintain unity, Æthelstan laid the foundation for the Kingdom of England as we know it. shutdown123
